I read an article from Newsweek’s column My Turn a few years ago called “The Art of Chinese Cooking”. The tagline was “I can make a mean seafood paella, but I never learned to cook the food my grandmother made”. I laughed at the irony that resonated with me all to well. Funny enough, I had never cooked seafood paella, the food of my grandmother, yet had spent countless hours with my Chinese friend cooking the food of hers.
I saved this article over the years as a reminder that there are few ways to learn more about your family, your heritage, and yourself than through food (especially when you are part of a food worshiping culture as is the Spanish one). I kept the article it in the hope that one day I too would whip out the old collection of recipes my grandmother passed on and learn more about the rich history behind Spanish cuisine. Here is the beginning of that journey…
Yet I hope not to stop there. I also want to discover new recipes and dishes from all around the world! Let my blog be your blog! Don't hesitate to throw suggestions my way!

So I’ve enjoyed cooking Spanish food thus far. And I will continue to do so. In fact I have decided to make croquetas, one of my all time favorites, very soon. HOWEVER, summer is here and I want to open up this blog to other flavors, foods, and spices!!…I might even try…wait for it…baking (oddly enough, not my forte by any means). Please throw any suggestions you may have my way!!
Paellas!! Paella de arroz negro (black rice), one of my all time favorites.
